Heating Up the Podium in Barrie
For Immediate Release
The final two rounds of the Rockstar Triple Crown AX Series took place Friday and Saturday night in front of nearly sellout crowds in Barrie ON.
Despite Mother Nature throwing January like weather in front of the teams and fans, the Royal Distributing FXR Yamaha team brought the heat both nights. With Jess Pettis back from his injury it would be his first appearance in the series, from the defending Future West AX Champ. From the first practice Friday it was evident that both Marco and Jess were going to battle to steal two spots on the box and give the series leader Shawn Maffenbeier a fight.
Qualifying 2-3 on Friday for the night show, lead to a heat win for Pettis and a hard fought second for Cannella that would give the boys great gate picks for the main.
The main event would see Maffenbeier grab the early lead followed by Pettis and Cannella. The Yamaha mounted duo would lay down pressure until a bobble from Maff would open the door for both to get by and pull away for a dominant 1-2 finish in front of the enthusiastic crowd. Marco would find himself moving up in the series standings to second only 1 point ahead of Ryan Lockhart headinginto the final round.
Saturday fast lap qualifying would show that the night before was no mistake with Pettis taking P1 with a 1 second gap on the field. Proving he is one of Canada’s elite indoor riders. The heat races would be a carbon copy of Friday with another win by Pettis and second by Cannella.
The final main of the season would be the last time riders would see each other until the outdoor portion of the series kicks off in 6 weeks in Calgary AB. Pettis wanted to leave an explanation mark that he is ready to contend every time the gate drops for a championship. Cannella had to manage his race as only a 1 point lead on the series standings for 2nd overall was on the line.
Pettis would pull the holeshot with his teammate mirroring his every move in second. As Pettis begun to stretch out a lead Marco would fight tooth and nail with Kawasaki mounted Shawn Maffenbeier for the 2nd spot on the podium. The veteran would find away around the rookie late in the main but Pettis and Cannella would put a sandwich on Maffenbeier on the box with a 1-3 finish. 2 nights of racing and 2 in a row with both riders on the box made for almost a perfect weekend for the team.
We would like to congratulate Shawn and the Monster Energy Astars Kawasaki team on their championship and looking forward to continuing the battle in the great outdoors.
